To norwood at computer dot org, what you are trying to do is character encoding conversion, this is
why unpack can't help you here.
You should have a look to iconv() function, and try something like:
<?php
$strWithoutNulls = iconv('UTF-16LE', 'UTF-8', $strWithNulls);
?>
for a conversion from UTF-16 (UTF-16LE for Little endian, or UTF-16BE for Big endian).
