Soundex is a limited algorithm for word matching, I would not use it, the initial letter problem is
just one of the flaws in it.
Better algorithms exist. Possibly the best one at the moment is the Double-Metaphone by Lawrence
Philips. Plenty of implementations exist, eg http://www.phpclasses.org/package/
