Anonymous is incorrect -- Windows systems, at least as far back as XP, and forward including Server
2003, Vista, Server 2008 and 7 are ALL compatible with forward slash path separators, meaning you
don't have to keep escaping the slashes, EXCEPT in the case of UNC names, however this:
<?php
$path = '\\\\somemachine/path/to/resource';
?>
is perfectly valid, as is this:
<?php
$path = 'c:/path/to/resource';
?>
