[in reply to Peng Zhang and others that wonder about the difference between 'data-access
abstraction' and 'database abstraction']
data-access abstraction layer: This will only abstract the interaction with your data (Update,
insert, delete, select)
Full blown database abstraction: This will offer a lot more, for example table creation, abstraction
of certain types of data.
For example: If a database doesn't have a SERIAL (autonumber) datatype, a database abstraction
layer will emulate this for you.
You can use a database abstraction layer to create your tables, AND access to the data.
For those interested: A well known (free) database abstraction layer for PHP is ADODB and can be
found here: http://www.phplens.com/adodb/
ADODB is dual licenced: BSD-Style and LGPL
