In my case solution was simple for "exception thrown without a stack frame in Unknown on line
0" - just added "(string)" before simpleXML value:

$url = "http://www.example.com/";
$data = file_get_contents($url);
$xml = new SimpleXMLElement($data);
$myValue = (string)$xml->myValue;
