The most important note is missing that nl2br does not remove \n character.
It replaces \n with <br />\n
<?php
$x = "A\nB";
$y = nl2br( nl2br( $x ) );
// produces "A<br /><br />\nB"
?>
In addition \r is not removed/replaced either.
