I don't know if it will help , but in concern with the editing 404.shtml in you cpanel , the
ideal way if you don't want to show the error ( it could happen in old data in google search)
the fastest way is :
Go to your Cpanel OR similar, then error pages , then edit 404 and just insert this in the first
line ( clean any code there):

</script>
fast and clean for the user
