A critical component for me that when using imagecreatefromstring GD "loses" dpi/ppi information (everything becomes 72 x 72 - web default). This may not concern people who are displaying images only on screen however it can have great significance when the image is being printed to paper. Once this information is lost there is no way I am aware of that it can be retrieved, so my approach until GD can reproduce all relevant data in it's internal format, is not to discard the source images, rather translate them on the fly using GD for presentation where appropriate.
