The note above that says: "Note: This function is only available if PHP is compiled with the
bundled version of the GD library." is especially applicable to Ubuntu systems, where the
package team there decided to break PHP's GD for "idealogical" reasons (they use
their system version of GD instead of the one bundled with PHP). If you want this package you will
need to recompile PHP, then uninstall the system's php5-gd and install your newly compiled
php5-gd library that you get only when recompiling a slightly altered copy of the source package
php5.
If you are however attempting to install a 5.2.X PHP branch from an older distro such as Karmic on a
system that only comes with the 5.3.X branch such as Lucid, you get huge problems, because
apache2-prefork-dev and libaprutil1-dev have dependencies that cannot be handled on a production
Lucid system running the Apache from Lucid and the PHP from Karmic. The solution I used was to
change all instances of lucid in /etc/apt/sources.list to karmic (which is how I got PHP 5.2.X on
Lucid in the first place), then install all the compile tools and dependencies minus those two which
have impossible dependencies, then change /etc/apt/sources.list back, then download and force
installing these two packages with dpkg --force-depends -i [packagename], THEN alter and finally
compile the source PHP package to use the bundled GD library instead of the Ubuntu system GD
library, and then and only then do you have the imagefilter() and other "bonus" phpgd
commands.
