I copy pasted the 2 examples and then I did not see anything. So immediately as a beginner I was
thrown in the deep waters of PHP debugging. It turns out that the copy-pasting included a space-like
character which was not a space and it was not visible in my editor. Removed the fancy character -
et voila - it worked.
