My own take on a count function :-).<br>
function xcount($text)
{
global $debug;
foreach (count_chars($text) as $my_value) $length=$length+$my_value;
tracker($length);
return($length);
}
and help in debugging
function tracker($message)
{
global $debug;
if($debug == "yes")
{
echo"<br>$message<br>";
}
}
