This workaround of jrivero24 will not work within an include:
// Workaround for PHP below 5.3 versions
if ( !defined('__DIR__') ) define('__DIR__', dirname(__FILE__));
__DIR__ in 5.3 within an include gives the name of the included file directory, but
dirname(__FILE__) seems to return the name of the script which requires the include.
I've not find and alternative yet.
