In response to tbdavis at greyshirt dot net's comment:
The notion NULL as it applies to PHP, has absolutely *nothing* whatsoever to do with the relational
model; it's a good idea to make a clear distinction between the two in your head, and to try to
forget about any similarity. PHP is a scripting language and not a data storage utility, let alone
an RDBMS.
The origins of the value NULL likely stem from the C language, in which the constant NULL means a
pointer that does not point to anything. Don't worry if that means nothing to you, as there are
(thankfully!) no pointers in the PHP language. However, PHP is implemented in C and there is a
strong analogy between whether or not a PHP variable name points to a value, and the value of a
pointer in C.
