I installed LAMP (Ubuntu) as per Dennis's very helpful note 17-Feb-2011 07:08
This worked well but I found the server did not by default recognise the .php file so I had to add
the following to the configuration file /etc/apache2/apache2.conf
# Bits I frigged around with
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .phtml .html
Then restarted the server
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
