Somewhy this feature is not documented but it is useful to know that mbstring creates old string
functions with "mb_orig_" prefix when overload feature is enabled.
Examples: mb_orig_strlen, mb_orig_substr and so on.
I've checked the source code. It works from 4.x till 5.3 versions. Hope it will be documented
and available officially.
