Here's how to build an xml document with namespaces; this example is building an rss feed...
<code>
<?php
$feed = xml_field_xml('<rss version="2.0" xmlns:media="http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/"
xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom"/>');
$channel = $feed->addChild('channel');
$channel->addChild('atom:link', NULL, 'http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom')
->addAttribute('href', $feed_link)
->addAttribute('rel', 'self')
->addAttribute('type', 'application/rss+xml');
?>
</code>
