For tothpeter:
Use date('n') for month argument to mktime to get month without leading zeros.
Use date('j') for day argument to mktime to get the day without leading zeros as specified
in the argument list.
The argument 09 for month must have evaluated to 0, giving the time for December of the previous
year.
