Look at the E-6 and E-5 in your test case and you'll see file_exists is faster in some cases. Also for php files you should test "include 'NoFileHere.php';" since include with throw a warning which you can capture. As a side note, if you are using APC (or some other extension) to save byte code then the result on an include for an existing file will be much faster!
