I also struggled with the
configure: error: libssh2 version >= 0.4 not found
error using verions 0.10 of ssh2 and 0.14 of libssh.
When looking in the config.log file I found that it was unable to find my SSL libraries, and as I
installed my openssl in /usr/local/ssl it could not find it. It was only looking in /usr/local/lib.
To get round this problem, I set
LDFLAGS="-L /usr/local/ssl/lib"
and this works a treat.
