A note in this page observes that "The GET variables are passed through urldecode()."
In PHP versions before 5.4, GET variables (as well as POST data and cookie data) are by default also
run through addslashes() (or its equivalent; see http://php.net/manual/en/function.addslashes.php).
This depends on the magic_quotes_gpc option, which by default was on.
The result of the default setting for PHP before 5.4 is that you may find extraneous backslashes
mysteriously appearing in GET variables.
