To the question memory management/out of memory for really large loop, this will prolly sound like a real dumb solution, but perhaps have the xpath_eval have its own function function func_to_xpath_eval(object xpath, str query, int tagoccurencenumber) { xpath_eval(xpath, query[tagoccurencenumber]); } , then return each instant you want to a variable outside the function, and I am pretty sure (though not quite) that once xpath_eval goes out of scope, there should be some sort of cleanup, so that might help, if there isn't cleanup, I'll have to smack somebody... However you might have to modify my modification on the query var, cause I can't remember how to get a certain tag occurence out of a doc with xpath >_<
