Until recently whether using object-oriented PHP or Procedural PHP really did not matter. Now, with
wording on php.net about deprecating certain things such as "mysql" in favor of
"mysqli" we are talking about major expense.
Back in the old-days of converting from an IBM computer to a Sperry, Honeywell, Burroughs, etc.,
computer system there were "conversions" that might cost millions of dollars. While
converting over time spreads the cost, there is still cost involved.
There are millions of PHP programs operating in the world. I suspect that the length of the
deprecation period will determine the overall cost to some degree since new programs may replace
old. However, the overall cost to convert will be measured in billions of euros / dollars. This is
a major expense.
