Note Submitter: Hudson Tavares ---- One simple thing that must be emphasized to prevent you to spent many hours finding what's going wrong: You must install the libjpeg-6b, not the most recent version (at the time I'm writing, there's the 8th version of libjpeg available for use) in order to use the JPEG support. If you don't, PHP will compile perfectly, but you'll get messages like "unrecoverable error" when trying to read / write JPEGs using GD functions. So, be careful about that, especially if you're using apt-get to download dependencies for PHP, as I did.
