I had terrible trouble getting PHP4 to compile as an Apache module,
but I eventually managed to get it working.
I used these versions of the software:
Apache v1.3.14 standard source tar
PHP v4.0.4 standard source tar
Compiler WorkShop Compilers 5.0 98/12/15 C 5.0
OS: Solaris 2.7 (Generic_106541-07)
I did the following for my build:
gunzip apache_1.3.14.tar.gz
tar xvf apache_1.3.14.tar
gunzip php-4.0.4.tar.gz
tar xvf php-4.0.4.tar
cd apache_1.3.14
./configure --prefix=/www
(set the prefix where you like as you will need to set it again later)
cd ../php-4.0.4
./configure --without-mysql --with-oracle --with-apache=../apache_1.3.14 --enable-track-vars
(I wanted Oracle support, and no MySQL support for mine.)
make
make install
( I got a few errors as I did not have the privs to copy the php.ini file as my login)
cd ../apache_1.3.14
./configure --activate-module=src/modules/php4/libphp4.a --prefix=/apache_live
(Note here you must set the prefix correctly, as this will be used for you install!!)
make
make install
(Precreate the Apache home directory first it will ensure it works and you can write it)
cp php.ini-dist /usr/local/lib/php.ini
(Edit your httpd.conf or srm.conf file and add: )
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
(You must also make sure mod is "switched-on", ad this section to httpd.conf file)
AddModule mod_php4.c
Start up Apache daemon, and create a script phptest.php and get the Apache server to serve it
to your browser, if all is well it will display the config page for v4.0.4.
<html>
<?php phpinfo(); ?>
</html>
All the best of luck.
