On some linux distributions (Red Hat 6.2 on Cobalt and Suse linux Professional 7.0 are two I had
this problem with.) you will get problems when running ./configure with the config ending with
"Cannot find lex" error. You will need to get GNU Flex and install it on your system from
http://www.gnu.org/software/flex/flex.html
IF YOU CONTINUE to have this problem after installing flex, then flex is not in the correct place.
Usually it installs in /usr/local/bin. Php configure, however, requires it to be in /usr/sbin. So
you need to make a soft link to the program ie
cd /usr/sbin
ln -s /usr/local/bin/flex flex
