In legacy system optimization, eval() could be of help.
<?php
while(big_loop())
{
...
include('some-file.php');
....
}
?>
can be converted to:
<?php
$included_file_contents = include('some-file.php');
while(big_loop())
{
...
eval($included_file_contents);
....
}
?>
Hope it reduces the disk access in each loop.
But stay away from include_once()/require_once()
