When trying to use qmail with php 4 (on a redhat 7.0 based system) if you get the error
"qmail-inject: fatal: read error" appearing in your Apache logs then you probably need to
remove the environment variable "QMAILMFTFILE" from your shell (/etc/profile.d/qmail.sh on
RH.7). This error appears to happen because although qmail is not called as root by apache,
it's parent UID is root and qmail-inject gets fooled into interpreting $HOME/.lists as
/root/.lists - which obviously cannot be accessed if the UID of the process is not root. When you
remove this variable from the calling shell, qmail-inject no longer looks for the .lists file,
therefore fixing the problem. This one took us ages to work out as it does not seem to be that well
documented. , rune@citipages.net - Sysadmin, Citipages Ltd.
