In PHP 4, for some reason, in certain circumstances, include() may take an extremely long time
(several minutes) to exit from the included script and return to the including script.
I have observed this behavior on a FreeBSD server with PHP 4.4.5, but have not been able to pinpoint
the exact way to reproduce this, and I don't know if this behavior is specific to the setup my
script runs in.
Anyway, in case anyone else runs into this problem, the solution is simple: omit any parentheses
around the included script name.
