I had a problem retreiving the date from my mysql database when I was using the mysql function
date_format() in a complex SQL query. to solve it I used a sql alias, such as
SELECT date_format(datefield,'%M %D %Y') AS nicedate;
then, to get the data into php you use $formatted_date = $row["nicedate"];
