If anyone is having troubles with ereg-style functions, espescially if you have recently upgraded
your php engine, and/or your your regular expressions are hanging your processes, take note that (it
appears) the PHP-4.0.4 non-perl-compatible regular expressions are largely broken. specificly, if
the match you are trying to make is a simple character class, or fully enclosed in parenthesis. (eg:
'[a-z]' or '(me|him)') There seems to be a fix for PHP-4.0.5, but since our
system can't upgrade to that until a redhat RPM comes out, we're making do with
perl-compatible regular expressions for the time being.
With luck this little note may come in handy to frustrated folks, and also with some luck I've
gotten all the details right while posting. please feel free to email me if I am in error :)
