In their endless wisdom the creators of PHP disabled abstraction of static functions (methods) in
strict mode in PHP 5.2 although PHP supports "late static binding", so you have to use
interfaces to force the implementation of static methods in inheriting classes (with the
disadvantage that such methods must be public and cannot be protected or private).
