This may save you time and effort (if you need to convert european languages such as Czech,
Portugees, German or Swedish)
the function mb_strtoupper() converts all accented characters in the latin alphabet, ie. , ñ, ü,
ý etc. This is easier than some of the suggestions below. It should also convert case properly for
russian, etc.
