my note above was due to a bug in the file functions: when you specify a url consisting of just a
domain without a trailing slash (eg "http://www.php.net" instead of "http://www.php.net/"), file(), fopen() etc fail. this has
been fixed in cvs so will probably not be present in 4.0.7 / 4.2.0.
