On a mac os (10.5+) it was necessary to run aclocal prior to autoreconf.
./configure --enable-64-bit was useful too, since it would compile as 32bit by default.
The last line now looks like
aclocal && autoreconf -i && ./configure --enable-64-bit && make &&
sudo make install
