Looking at this function I'm left wondering how one would go about setting the ALPHA channel
information for a particular color.
For example, I'd like to write semi-transparent text on an image... it would seem that I need
to allocate the color (r,g,b) and an alpha channel... but the color allocation routines don't
have an alpha variable.
The above code works great for me, BTW... but I had to use Photoshop. I made a gradient of
transparent to black and it works great.
