I had troubles when using this as an is_hex function, if anyone else runs into troubles here is an
alternative approach. Not a very efficient one, but it worked quite well for what i needed it for.

function is_hex($hexValue){
if($hexValue == dechex(hexdec($hexValue)))
return true;
return false;
}
?>
