It seems a lot of people are having trouble connecting to MSDE - so did I. Eventually I got it
working. The trick was to change to registered server name from (local) to be the same as the
machine name (ie in the Enterprise Manager, delete the registration and then re-register it). Also,
make sure TCP/IP is enabled (and I actually removed named pipes for good measure). Viola -
connection successful.
