Unless you enjoy tinkering (as I do) then stable mssql access from Linux is not a viable option. ms
tabular data stream (tds) protocol is not an open standard and any solution, such as freetds, has
been painstakingly slapped together from packet hacking.
freetds.org for Linux is a long way off release status, and you can also pretty much forget sql2000.
BLOB field access is also very limited and unpredictable. Using Sybase (also tds based) will get you
the basics, but if you need anything more then it's not going to be a good solution. Migration
to postgres or mysql will really be the only solution if you need reliable data access from Linux.
So if you 'really' need your mssql data under Linux then save yourself time and money, and
concentrate on migration rather than connectivity.
