In Example #1 of this documentation seems to be a wrong line.
$str = "Is your name O\'reilly?";
is equal to
$str = "Is your name O'reilly?";
So it should be rather
$str = "Is your name O\\'reilly?";
or
$str = 'Is your name O\\\'reilly?';
