I came across an interesting err, "feature" of the mail support in PHP recently. When I
compiled PHP for a particular server I'm playing on I hadn't yet installed sendmail, as at
the time I didn't need mail support. When I reached a point where I decided that one of my
scripts needed to send email, I went and installed sendmail but whenever I invoked the mail()
function I recieved the error:
"mail() not supported in this build"
php.ini was configured correctly, as was sendmail. It appears that if an MTA isn't installed at
buildtime PHP won't compile in the mail functions, which is fine, except I couldn't find
mention of this fact anywhere in the online docs, or in the INSTALL/README files, and the error
message is less than useful. Just keep in mind when you're building a server to install your
MTA before you compile PHP!
