My server had problems with mysql processes gradually increasing until no further connections were
allowed - about 30. Upgrading all the software (PHP, Apache, Redhat, MySQL) didn't fix the
problem. I finally replaced all calls to mysql_pconnect() with mysql_connect() in all pages (e.g.,
phorum and phpmyadmin). The server now seems to stay at about 5-6 connections under full load -
about 1000 hits per minute.
