Never provide a CURLOPT_CUSTOMREQUEST value of 'HEAD'. It will cause cURL to timeout.
Instead set CURLOPT_NOBODY to true.
The problem occurs because CURLOPT_CUSTOMREQUEST directly substitutes what cURL sends in transit,
but not the response handling logic. It causes it to stall waiting for data that will never come.
