You put every passwords in a separate file that you call .htconfig and chmod 700.
The .ht* name prevents people from the internet to retrieve the file as apache default config
returns a 403 error for any file whose name start with ".ht".
The chmod 700 is just another protection in case something went wrong and apache would ignore the
".ht" restriction (which is a very improbable thing).
