Similar to these functions, there is also the backtick ("back-tick") execution operator:

This operator runs the command given inside the backticks, and supports string interpolation just
like double quotes:

$dir = addcslashes(sys_get_tmp_dir(), '"');
echo ls "{$dir}";
?>
