It looks like the file() method, when used with an HTTP URL, does not know how to handle a redirect
(HTTP response code 302). If the page has been relocated, the file() will return with a null value.
This is painful for a couple of reasons, but I don't have a very good work-around at this point
(besides using an external progam like 'wget').
