The last comment is 100% false, I feel sorry for the guy who couldn't make it work, but with
relative ease, using FreeTDS, I was able to connect to our MSSQL server from our primary linux web
server. When I say relative ease, I mean less then 3 minutes extra work then a normal PHP install.
Not only was it easy to install, but it is rock-hard stable. The site receives about a million
unique hits a week and almost every page of the site hits the database, it's lightning fast,
and no errors or dropped connections. On a benchmark it turned out to be faster then ASP running
directly off the SQL server.
