For whatever reason, I can't get PHP to pick up changes to the [session] section of
/usr/local/lib/php.ini, including 'autostart' and more importantly,
'cookie_lifetime'. (It picks up changes to at least some other sections when I view
'php_info(), but not [session])
Instead, I had to use a .htaccess file to make it work, like so:

php_flag session.auto_start on
php_value session.cookie_lifetime 1500
