hi i am using the following statement and i am get an error any advice?

if(mysql_num_rows($result))
error:
Warning: Supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in c:\path\to\code.php on line 29
line 29 is the code above "or so i believe at least" i have installed the latest version
of PHP and i am still getting the error.
any help apprieciated.
