The ∓ problem can be fixed by including the errant data in a CDATA tag..
For example:
<auditor>ARTHUR ANDERSEN ∓ CO</auditor>
Won't work, but
<auditor><![CDATA[ARTHUR ANDERSEN & CO]]></auditor>
Will..
