One additional note on Bigdan's use of the $PATH_INFO variable to pass information on to the
script: it tends to mess up $PHP_SELF if the $PATH_INFO contains the name of a php script
Example:
URL: http://host/dir/index.php/foo/bar/index2.php
$PHP_SELF = http://host/dir/index.php/foo/bar/index2.php
and not http://host/dir/index.php as expected
